Why your carpet is rippling and what stretching fixes

You see waves down the hallway. A ridge near the sofa. A bubble that returns after you flatten it. That is the latex secondary backing relaxing and the carpet creeping off its tack strip. Most of the time the original install was kicked in, not power stretched. Humidity finishes the job. Marine layer mornings in closed apartments keep the backing soft, and it never pulls back on its own.

Proper restretching means a power stretcher braced wall to wall. Knee kickers are for closets and small corners. Furniture comes off the field. The carpet is lifted off the gripper, re-tensioned, hooked, and the excess trimmed. In slab-level rooms common to postwar tract homes, old concrete nails in the tack strip pull loose. Fresh strip gets anchored before anything is stretched.

Before tensioning, dry soil comes out. Beach sand ground into the pile backing near entries and stairs abrades the yarn every time it flexes. Low-pile loop and Berber in 1990s–2000s rental units also needs snags and open seams addressed first, or stretching opens them wider.
