We have carpet laid over the original hardwood in our 1940s house. Is cleaning safe for the floor underneath?

Yes, with the right amount of water. A lot of Culver City homes from the 1930s through the 1950s have wall-to-wall carpet in the bedrooms and living room sitting directly on the original hardwood, sometimes over a raised foundation. We use controlled extraction so the carpet comes up damp, not soaked, and we make sure the backing and pad aren't left holding moisture against the boards. If the carpet is loose at the tack strip or the pad has already broken down, we'll tell you before we start rather than after.

Why does the carpet just inside our front door look darker than the rest of the room?

Street dust and vehicle soot. Culver City is dense, with a lot of traffic moving through, and that fine grit rides in on shoes and settles into the first few feet of carpet inside the entry. On older stucco homes where the front door opens straight into the living room with no real landing, there's nothing to catch it. It's the most common thing we're called about here. Those traffic lanes usually respond well to a pre-treatment and a slower extraction pass, though carpet that's been walked on that way for many years may not go fully back to its original tone.

How long will the carpet take to dry?

Usually a matter of hours rather than a full day. Culver City sits far enough inland that the morning marine layer tends to break earlier than it does closer to the coast, so afternoon air is drier and dry times are shorter than you'd get in a beachfront house. Cross-ventilation helps a lot in the compact single-storey layouts here. If we're working over a raised foundation or the day stays overcast, we'll bring air movers and set them where the airflow actually does something.

Can you come out the same day?

Often, yes, depending on how the schedule looks that morning. Smaller jobs, a couple of bedrooms in a postwar tract home, or a one-bedroom unit in one of the newer mixed-use buildings, are easier to fit in on short notice than a whole-house clean.
