I have hand-knotted wool and silk rugs over hardwood — can you clean those in the house?

Some, but not all. Wool and silk need pH-appropriate, fiber-safe cleaning and controlled drying, and a hand-knotted rug on a hardwood or stone floor can't be soaked in place without risking the floor beneath and the dyes in the rug. We look at the rug first: construction, dye stability, and how much soil is trapped in the foundation. Lower-risk pieces can be cleaned on site with a dry or low-moisture method. Hand-knotted silk and older wool pieces are usually better handled off site, where they can be dusted, washed and dried flat under proper conditions. We'll tell you which category yours falls into before anything gets wet.
