Our carpet has been down for decades and the traffic lanes are worn — is cleaning still worth it, or are we past that point?

Worth a look either way, and we'll tell you honestly. In these Del Aire postwar tracts we see a lot of carpet that's been in place a long time, and there's a real difference between soiled and worn. Soiling comes out. Wear, where the fiber tips are abraded flat in the hallway and the path to the kitchen, doesn't, because the damage is mechanical, not dirt. Cleaning will still lift the color and get rid of the grit chewing at the base of the pile, but the lanes will read lighter than the rest of the room. Plenty of owners here clean and get years more out of it. Others are already thinking about pulling it, since a fair number of these houses have the original hardwood underneath. Everything has a gray cast to it, even in rooms nobody uses. What causes that and does cleaning fix it?

That's the most common complaint we get in this pocket. Sitting under the LAX approach and hemmed in by Hawthorne and El Segundo traffic, the air here carries fine soot and urban particulate that drifts in through windows and doors and settles into carpet as a uniform gray film. It isn't a stain, so spot cleaning does nothing for it. It responds well to a full hot-water extraction, because the particles are sitting in the pile rather than bonded to the fiber. Light-colored carpet in the front rooms usually shows the biggest change. It will come back over time (that's the neighborhood, not the cleaning) but a regular schedule keeps it from building into something that dulls the whole house.

How long will the carpet stay damp? We get heavy marine layer most mornings.

Longer than an inland house, and we plan for it. Being this close to the coast, the morning marine layer keeps outdoor humidity up well past sunrise, so opening windows early doesn't help much. North-facing rooms in these single-storey tracts get almost no direct sun and are always the slowest. We bring air movers and set them in those rooms specifically, and we control how much moisture goes down in the first place. Most jobs are walkable when we leave and fully dry the same day. If your layout has a shaded bedroom or a back room that never warms up, tell us up front and we'll allow extra drying time there.

Can you come out same day, and how fast do you normally get here?

Same day happens fairly often, usually when someone has a spill or a pet accident they don't want sitting. It depends on what's already booked and where the truck is. Del Aire is a small unincorporated area with easy access off the surrounding arterials, so getting here isn't the constraint. For a whole-house clean, a day or two out is more typical and gives you time to clear floors. If you call and same day isn't possible, we'll say so straight away rather than penciling you in and pushing it.
