Why does the odor come back after the carpet dries?

Because deodorizing was sprayed, not sourced. Odor lives in the pad and sometimes the slab. In slab-level Santa Monica rooms, pet urine wicks down into the pad and sits under the backing. Topical mist masks it for days. Then humidity rises, the salts rehydrate, and the smell returns. We probe with a moisture meter and a UV light first. Pad may need lifting in one corner to confirm.

Order matters more than product. Dry-soil removal comes first, always. Beach sand ground into the pile backing near entries and stairs holds odor-bearing debris. Same with wildfire ash and Santa Ana dust. Vacuum, then agitate, then extract. Enzyme or oxidiser dwells on the fiber before extraction, not after.

Fiber changes the plan. Nylon and polyester cut pile in postwar tract homes tolerates a wet enzyme flush. Wool and silk rugs in hillside homes do not. Those go off-site or get low-moisture work. Berber in 1990s–2000s rentals wicks badly and browns if overwet.

Drying is the real constraint here. Marine layer mornings and closed apartments hold moisture in. We run air movers and open what we can. Trapped damp pad smells worse than the original problem.
